Marta is the director for Samba da Terra, Sacramento's premier samba troupe. She is a native from Bahia, Brazil and came to the United States in 2000 after teaching samba in Brasil for 10 years. Marta and her brother had a group of samba-reggae and participed in the Carnaval of Brazil with other famous groups from Bahia: OLODUM, ILE AYE, GANG DO SAMBA, HARMONIA DO SAMBA and more. Every year she represents the Samba Sacramento at the Carnival of San Francisco. By Dancers For Dancers - live show, DVD shoot and workshops!!!

Just wanted to remind you of the By Dancers For Dancers show coming up on Feb 24. We need all the enthusiastic, wild cheering people we can get in the crowd because we will be shooting a performance DVD that night. So practice that zaghareet and come on down.

Also, at intermission and after the show we will take the cameras through the audience to interview people about what give a dancer the "it" factor. That footage will appear on a future Secrets of the Stage segment!

I am formulating a lecture and video series on the Dancing in the Golden Era of Egyptian Film. It will span over several weeks and be in several parts, and it will include watching and talking about the dancing of each dancer.

With each dancer, we will discuss technique, performance, era costuming, essence of their dance, their biographies, and more, as well as introduce the singers who sometimes appear in the scene with them.

Meryem Vani's showcase on Tuesday, January 29, 2008 is still looking for a few dancers. The show takes place at the Tsunami Cafe at 4019 Sunset Blvd. in Silverlake, Los Angeles. Starts at (approximately) 7pm and ends at (approximately) 9pm. Please bring your own CD or cued-up audio cassette tape. Between five and seven minutes is ideal. No swords or fire. Snakes are okay. This was posted last night by a creepazoid named Vaughnster or ''Lord Vaghuan'', who has been in and kicked out of many online groups, in this case, it was posted through another person in my Yahoo! Bellyrolling females group (and God knows how many other Yahoo! groups in particular). This guy has a bellydance fetish, at least in my opinion, that goes way out-of-bounds, and this posting, which I deleted this AM as soon as I went through it, proves that point (pay attention to the last couple of sentences):

The Vaughanster' s Bellydance Video Conte$t!

To enter, prepare a bellydance video just for me. To prove it's just
for me, introduce yourself to me, addressing me as "Lord Vaughan"
or "Vaughanster" , and giving the date right before beginning to
perform.
I'm not setting a time limit, but I recommend that you belly dance
for at least twenty minutes. Save the video on DVD or VHS. I have a
multi-system VCR, TV and DVD player, so format shouldn't be an issue.

If you win, you will need to provide an address to send the prize
money to. I prefer to pay via PayPal, in which case, I would only

Do NOT submit an entry until February, 2007, since I will still be in

There is no limit to the number of entries one dancer may submit, but
I will regard each entry separately, on its own merits. In other
words, I won't simply award 1st Place to the dancer who sends me the
most entries or the most footage; I'll choose the three videos I like
the best, and award the prizes accordingly. Yes, it's possible (but
not likely) that I may award all three prizes to the same dancer, if
she sends me the best three entries.

There are no "holds barred" in this contest. Anyone, of any age,
from any country, with any amount of experience, is welcome to submit
as many entries as they like. The winning entries will be the ones I
find myself watching over and over the most.

The following are not requirements, but merely recommendations, since
I've been watching belly dance videos for a quarter of a century, and
already know what I like and don't like:

1. Camera work:

A. Use the best quality of video equipment and material
available to you.
B. Avoid cutting, panning, zooming, and special effects.
Especially avoid cutting. Set the camera up at what would be eye-
level for a man sitting down, and let it roll. Try to create the
illusion that you're performing for me in person, that I'm sitting
still, and the camera is my unblinking eyes.

2. Costume:

A. The most important part of your costume is your body. It
should appear trim and fit.
B. The lower you wear your belt on your hips, the better.
C. Coordinate colors and styles, including the background and
lighting. Performing in ancient attire at a modern gym would
probably look tacky.

3. Dancing

A. Avoid traveling steps.
B. Avoid pointing your bum at the camera.
C. Usually, if not always, your navel should be the focal point
of the camera.

A Sad Loss to the Dance Community

The President of NTMEDA has been contacted by a representative of the Asad family to share some important information with the dance community. Ahmad and Dee Dee Asad were in Montreal Canada hosting Dina in a seminar and show this past weekend. The family knows that the community loves them and is concerned by what they may have heard. At this time, questions from the community are difficult for the family to answer so they want you to know what happened.

At the Saturday night show, after the Dina performance, Ahmad got on stage and made an announcement about how happy he was to bring Dina to Canada, where she had never been before. Ahmad then said something he had never said on stage before. He told his wife that he loved her, that he appreciated all her hard work and that she “makes everything happen.” He then went up to their room where he suffered a massive heart attack and subsequently passed away on Saturday, November 3, 2007. Ahmad Asad was buried on November 5, 2007, according to his Islamic faith, in Montreal. Dee Dee’s sister and her husband were with her in Montreal and Dee Dee’s sister will accompany her back to Dallas.

The family has requested that there be no phone calls at this time. Cards and e-mails are most appreciated. Cards may be sent to 321 Valley Cove Drive Garland, TX 75043 and e-mails may be sent to sales@littleegypt.com.

Little Egypt and the Asad family are a major presence in our community and the family understands that the community cares for them and will want to pay their respects. Hey all,
My new studio, ShoeBox Studio, opened Friday night with a host of great bellydance performances.
Now the real fun begins!

We are offering performance workshops (6 week workshops that end with a student showcase at a local theater) taught by Liz Strong, Ariellah, and myself, and ongoing weekly fusion technique class with Gibson Pearl.
You can just take drop in if you dont want to perform (though it's cheaper if you register for all 6 weeks in advance - and come on! the stage is half the fun!)
These will be small and personal - workshops max out at 15 people (you can register online), and you will get hands-on attention from each of these amazing teachers.
The dates are Nov. 5th-Dec. 14th (performance Dec. 14th @ 8pm)
I hope some of you can make it! I am so honored to have these incredible artists teaching at the ShoeBox, and I cant wait to see all of the choreographies on the stage!

Hello Fellow Dancers!

I am pleased to announce that I will be teaching another class series beginning this Monday, April 16th.

The format of this one will be different from last time and will also include belly dance (basic to mid-level - I'd love folks with relatively little training to be able to feel at ease, but also be able to keep up with and challenge those at intermediate and even advanced levels). Definately a hearty amount of isolation and repetition, with some choreography at the end of each class.

assuit...any chance someone is selling an assuit dress?

I know its a long shot, but I'm wondering if ianyone is looking to sell an assuit dress in the L.A. area? I just need it really for one song, one night OR IF anyone would be interested in renting theirs to me (again it will be danced in for litterally one 5 minute song and I can pay like $30 bucks and pick it up on that day and deliver it back to you the next day or that night after the show, even)? It sounds wierd to say, but I will shower almost immidiately before wearing it, will not break a sweat AT ALL as the number is short , and I don't smoke and wont spray perfume. oh yeah, and ofcourse Ill take it off immediately after using it!

Jingle All The Way was held on December 14, 2006 at the Larry Chimbole Cultural Center in Palmdale, California through the Desert Communities Chapter of MECDA. Sunday December 10th I will be teaching and performing in the Santa Clara (south of San Francisco) area of California

Come on down and check out two workshops I'm very proud to present:
1 - Dynamic Drills and Techniques: From sassy, we'll break down a few combinations into edible chunks, beginning with drills and exercises to achieve the proper presentation, through concept, energy flow, weight transitions, arm frames and all the delicious things that make the Middle Eastern dance geeks drool! I have not only concepts to share like texture sequencing and morphing, but a very different way of breaking down the steps to learning how to learn sequences of movements. I've heard some great feedback, and I'd love to hear yours -- come on down to check out the workshop. Although this class is suitable to all levels, I've found that beginning students find themselves able to grasp complex concepts, and advanced students and pros have been able to find that extra little twist intheir foundations that helps them excel in a new direction. I'm very proud of this material. I recently taught it on the East Coast to rave reviews.

2 - Shimmy Layers/Drum Solo & Accents/ Master Class: Oh, let me challenge you! I have such a different way of teaching choreographies. I really hope to inspire teachers to teach in a similar method, because although it takes alot of work to set up, you'll be amazed at how fast your students can grasp concepts of motion, energy, technique and expression! Add into it some of my signature concepts of foundation technique (TikTokBlehEenh!) and shimmy layers and we'll put together a more complex presentation of my latest drum solo choreography. It's most delicious!

My signature teaching style is designed to assist dancers move from 'doing moves' to moving and interpreting the music, defining textures that are organic rather than pure mechanics. It's the smoulder....the passion...Yum!

And then, I get to perform at a restaurant!
Those of you who know my performances know my big stage work. I'll admit, I love working restaurants. The intimate environment allows a fun presentation of the dance. I'm *really* looking forward to this show and getting to entertain. Ask the people who used to go to the restaurants I performed at in my...um....30's. :)

Healer puts new show together supporting the amazing 'LucEnt dosSieR Vaudeville Cirque'.

The show is a major step in the tribal energy direction the band is looking for and called for the band to take a more Middle Eastern percussive and less heavy metal approach which features instrumental versions of songs from Healer's debut CD "Awakening" as well as new material that the band is recording for their next release. The show includes didgeridoo player Bryan Rosenbaum and percussionist/Ivans 12 year old son Mason de Prume. It started as just an experiment but since the eight Coachella performances went so well 'LucEnt dosSieR Vaudeville Cirque' will perform in the three Warped Tour dates and the huge Lightning in a Bottle Festival in July.

For those of you who have not seen a performance yet by, 'LucEnt dosSieR Vaudeville Cirque'. They are an amazing performance troupe innovating a new style of entertainment that has emerged from the Los Angeles underground Art and Music scene...

The new inter-active show is off the hook -
trapeze, silks, stilt walkers, fan dancing, belly dancing, lavish costumes, all infused with the usual sensual LucEnt magic and completely wacked out mayhem!

I will be performing at Burning Man at Sanctuary Village (4:30 and Catharsis) at 9:30 pm and I am opening up for the legendary Karsh Kale! I will be performing in a 30 foot multimedia dome at Camp Jyoti.

I'm saving my money for something in $400 range & really want to find to find something similar to what you see on the dahlal site that I can actually try on before buying. so far, I've been to adam basma on la cienega blvd. and it was a bit more than I care to pay.

Bellydance jobs in California....

Has anyone noticed the fact that there seem to be fewer and fewer restaraunts hiring dancers?? Did the entertainment license costs go up or what??? Thank God you private gigs.....a girl could starve to death otherwise. I have considered opening up a sort of "GYPSY CAFE" ...with Middle Eastern, Indian goodies (I'm a former pastry chef)..and having dancers...but even with the current interest in ethnic dance and cuisine, I wonder if it would be a struggle to make a decent profit. What does everyone think???? I also considered combining it with a studio as an adjacent space....even looked at places.....locations sucked!

Healer will be performing at The Gig in Hollywood on Friday, May 27, 2005 at 8:30 pm.
I was the original drummer from White Zombie. Since I left WZ I wanted to form a unique band that incorporated Middle Eastern melodies and percussion yet still had fat guitars and drums. Well, I made it happen. We just finished our first album called "Awakening".

Shimmy into the New Year with the Three Sisters Bellydancers!

The Three Sisters are finally all in the same area and ready to get down to some serious Bellydancing. We are beginning weekly classes (starting Weds January 12) conveniently located in the heart of the Mission at Studio LaSolea (3376 19th street between Mission and Capp). Classes are $11 drop-in.

Beginning Classes -Weds 7-8

Come and learn the isolations and traveling movements that are the foundation of bellydance in a fun and supportive environment. Classes are appropriate for anyone from absolute dance beginners to long-time dancers. Through the Three Sisters Format we will show you how to increase strength and flexibility while also learning how to move with fluidity and, most importantly, to express joy in your own body.

Intermediate Classes - Weds 8-9
In addition to perfecting the movements from our beginning class, these classes will put an emphasis on combinations, choreographies, and precision of movement. Intermediate students will learn more complicated traveling steps, isolations, and shimmy techniques.
